On Sunday April 14th, three churches from the University of Ghana, Legon Interdenominational Church (L.I.C), St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and Christ Anglican Church went on a Palm Sunday march, dubbed Hosanna March, around the Legon campus. Almost everyone was armed with palm branches and fronds with songs and dancing on the roads. And with music from both the Catholic and Anglican brass bands, everyone celebrated in remembrance of the triumphant entry of Jesus.
The procession started around 8:30am to 9:20am with Christ Anglican Church leading, Legon Interdenominational Church following next and then the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. The roads were safe as Knights and Saints of St. Johns of the Catholic Church helped in directing vehicles using the roads at the time.

Starting at the Christ Anglican Church, they went through the back of the Biochemistry Department, and then headed towards Commonwealth Hall, using the school of nursing road through the back of Volta hall. As their return root, they descended towards the Volta Hall roundabout taking a turn towards the University of Ghana Business School. They finally, moved towards the NNB block. Upon approaching their “finish line”, everyone dispersed straight to their various churches for the day’s sermon. One could hear the fading sounds from the brass bands as congregants from these three churches dispersed.
Mr. Nana Fosu Nyante the preacher man for L.I.C that morning preached during the celebration of their Children’s Day. He focused on how the children during the days of the triumphant entry also served the Messiah. He exclaimed that, “The young children shouted hosanna. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, they shouted the more….”
What is this triumphant entry all about?
After Jesus again referenced his coming death and honored Mary for her faithful act, he finished his meal with his friends and uttered something rather strange. He instructed two of his disciples to go ahead to the next village Bethpage and find a donkey, the scriptures reads “saying to them, go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.” Matthew 21:2-3
Now imagine the scene: A large crowd of Passover visitors, already had heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. By now many of them had heard that Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead and wanted to see this Jesus in person. Many saw this as a sign of Jesus’ identity as the Messiah and they wanted to proclaim him as king when he entered Jerusalem.
Jesus arrived at Bethpage, and he got onto the donkey to ride the rest of the way. In this he fulfilled the ancient prophecy from hundreds of years earlier, “…rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” Zachariah 9:9
Eddie James a co-founder of Skitguys opined that, “Palm Sunday is the time for us to prepare our hearts for the agony of his passion and the joy of his resurrection. So this week let’s cover the roads with the cross, with all our hearts, our souls and minds as we reflect on the final week of Jesus’ life. And prepare for the anticipation for the return of the King of Kings .”
