Dr. Jeff Bassey, an Executive Director of Graduate Training Institute at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has urged the youth to be focused in order to succeed in their chosen careers.

He said: “Every young person or individual should have the discipline of defining a purpose and direction in life and harness all energy to achieve it through hard work, commitment and a positive, positive mindset.”

Dr. Bassey, who gave the advice at the end of a three-day leadership conference organized by Prophet Michael Andoh Ministries at Adenta in Accra said the youth should not look for success without the God factor.

He said the youth constitute a critical mass of the population, who would take over the mantle of leadership in the future and it would serve a good purpose if their leadership perspective were directed to meet the demand of society.

He advised them to take their time and build themselves academically, morally and physically and pursue their goals passionately, saying they could only meet their aspirations with proper focus on the life they choose to lead.

Dr. Bassey said life was tallied with vision and not age and that the age at which one succeeds has not much relevance and therefore the young ones should not allow the African belief and value systems that life begins at 40 or the female child was not as important as the male child, among others.

The Director implored the youth to have faith in themselves and resolve to succeed in their homeland and should erase the notion that one could only make it outside the shores of Ghana.

“We should be responsible in building our own continent and for that matter our country because no one else would do it for us.”

Prophet Michael Andoh, the Founder of the Michael Andoh Ministries said he was passionate about the youth and that the event was organized to give them skills that would enable them assume leadership role with competence.

he Senior Pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Dawhenya, has asked leaders to stop seeing youth advancement policies as an appendage to other policies and believing that it will effectively raise the youth into responsible citizens.

Reverend Djaba Nyakotey says, “Any country that forsakes its young people in education, in health and social and spatial planning will pay dearly for it.”

Rev. Nyakotey said this at the St. Mary’s Anglican Junior High School, Tema Newtown, after he led the presentation of 552 copies of the Holy Bible to pupils and staff of the school.

Rev. Nyakotey observed the little effort that went into developing the interest of the youth by saying, “There were places where towns and communities spring up without playing fields, without parks for children to let out excess energy, and this manifest itself in abnormal and deviant behaviors with some becoming criminals.”

In that regard, he indicated that “the way forward for any nation, church, school, family, was to focus and invest in children because that was where the future lie.”

In responding to the high prevalence rate of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases in Tema Newtown, Rev. Nyakotey chided parents for not being there for their children.

He insisted that children ended up throwing away their lives because it was either the parents were physically absent or had abandoned their duties to these children.

He therefore believed that the distribution of the Bibles would help the young ones read texts that would have positive impacts on their lives and take them out of their bad states.

He said, “Since sin came into the world, man has been fairly negligent and consistently running away from God. So going to God is a great insurance, and it helps, but we cannot go to God and raise children without the cooperation of parents, the school and the church.”

He added that “the Bible is light for our path; the Bible gives a person some wisdom; the Bible gives the person some examples to learn from because it has very serious behavioral patterns one can learn from.”

He observed that one could circumvent one’s problems so long as one stuck to the Bible with vigilance and had a relationship with one’s maker.

The Head Teacher of the School, Mrs. Marian Cobblah, in receiving the Bibles, told of the many distractions that confronted the school in the discharge of their duties in the community, and therefore was optimistic that the Bibles would help the children focus in making something meaningful of the their lives.

He asked other organizations to come on board and help in any way that they could to inspire the children to stick to their books and lead disciplined lives as a way of complementing the efforts of the school.

The Bibles were presented by the Shiloh Baptist Church, Dawhenya, through the Glorious Vibrations Incorporated, a Music and Drama Group formed by former students of Tema Secondary School.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Deputy Minister of Education, in charge of General Education, has urged stakeholders in education to encourage students to be innovative and create technologies that would promote the growth of the Continent.

“You should be motivated to develop technologies and set up innovative shops and create applications that can be used around the world,” he emphasized.

Dr Adutwum was opening the African Curriculum Association (ACA) 2019 two-day conference being held in Accra.

It is under the theme “Using curriculum to achieve better educational outcomes: An African dialogue” and organised by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA).

Educationists, Administrators, Civil Society Organisations, Policy makers, among others, from 4O member countries and partners are attending the conference to help refine a curriculum that was standard for the Continent.

The Deputy Minister said “every people had ten per cent of its population being talented and Africa had not yet tapped its own yet, thus the need to encourage students to use those talents and not become garbage in, garbage out graduates”.

He called for ways to produce quality human capacity, which would make Africa compete with the rest of the world, and not be only interested in revising curriculum.

Professor Kwame Akyeampong of the University of Sussex, mentioned some of the challenges of Ghana’s educational system as overloading of curriculum on learners, sending children to school at the wrong time, students dropping out of school, poverty, language used and teacher absenteeism, among others. He said a learning crisis still exists despite persistent years of reforms, compared to the developed countries, where significant improvement had been made through the identification of the problems.

Professor Akyeampong said there was also curriculum fragment, though efforts had been made to harmonise it, to ensure coherency, adding that, there was the need to change the way the learning process model was approached.

He called on the participants to come up with ways where technology would be used to transform learning among students.

Dr Prince Hamid Armah, Executive Secretary for NaCCA said the meeting would enable them to achieve a collective vision as a continent. “It would help close the gaps, improve design of curriculum, find ways to improve teachers’ training, identify and craft solutions to challenges encountered, to help African students to build the continent.”

Mr Abdourahamure Diallo, the UNESCO representative in Ghana, urged participants to focus on establishing the link curriculum, teachers and others that were in line with the provision of better education.

They should be active in bringing out the best curriculum that would assist in achieving the SDG 4, which seeks to promote quality and long learning, Mr Diallo stated.

Ms Grace Baguma, Chairperson for ACA said the ACA, formerly, African Curriculum Organisation had chalked successes such as being recognized by UNESCO and the African Union, registered for curriculum implementation and assessment to improve education in Africa, increased its membership, among others within one year.

Assisting in supporting member countries, building network communications, encouraging and promoting programmes, building capacities of curriculum developers were some of the roles of ACA, she said.
