The Ambassador of the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Teferi Fikre Gossaye, has paid a working visit to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

H.E Gossaye in brief remarks, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and indicated his delight in visiting the University. He outlined the purpose of the meeting, disclosing plans to explore opportunities for establishing a connection between the University of Ghana and the African Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX), alongside considering the signing of an MoU to formalise the comprehensive cooperation between the two institutions. This he said will aim at collectively addressing leadership and development challenges in Africa.

His Excellency Teferi Fikre Gossaye

The African Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX) is an institution reestablished in June, 2021 by the Council of Ministers, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to provide various learning opportunities to national government leaders. The academy expects systemic-level leadership change through its gradual cultivation of a future generation of leaders and executives in Africa who share a common vision and work culture. Through leadership policy research and advisory functions, the academy aspires to influence leaders in the public, private and civic society sectors to shape and gravitate their policies and leadership structure into a meritocratic, youth-inclined and gender-balanced direction.

The Ambassador emphasised the importance of mobilising resources like human expertise across countries to build leadership capacity in public and private sectors across the continent. He also highlighted the potential of utilising AFLEX as a platform to connect senior universities and institutions, fostering collaboration to collectively tackle leadership and development challenges in Africa.

Ambassador Gossaye finally stated, “We have various strategic documents, including reform pillars and other related materials. I will share these documents with the relevant stakeholders to explore how we can establish a significant presence for the Academy in Ghana and across Africa as we aim to create an environment conducive to understanding how we can enhance mutual benefits, particularly in terms of human resource mobilisation”.

In her response, Prof. Amfo expressed the University’s willingness to embrace opportunities for collaboration not only within academia but beyond to generate meaningful impact on societies. She stressed the multitude of resources available for mutual benefit among Africans, highlighting the lack of extensive collaborations between the University of Ghana and Ethiopian universities.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo

Prof. Amfo conveyed her deep passion for leadership development and nurturing the next generation of leaders through initiatives like the proposed leadership academy. She expressed her eager anticipation in receiving the official documents and formally signing the Memorandum of Understanding.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare, in his closing remarks expressed interest in the potential collaboration between the University of Ghana and the African Leadership Excellence Academy.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Gordon Awandare (left) and Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs Directorate (right)

He believes that partnering with the African Leadership Excellence Academy aligns well with the University’s vision of developing excellence in leadership through institutions and looks forward to further exploring the mutual benefits of the partnership.

Also in attendance were Dr. Elizier Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director, Public Affairs Directorate and Ms. Pascaline Songsore, Senior Assistant Registrar, also at the Directorate. Accompanying the Ambassador was Hirut Eshetu, Consul for Diaspora Affairs at the Embassy of Ethiopia.

The occasion also coincided with the maiden matriculation of 26 undergraduate students for the 2023-2024 academic year. The campus was established as one of two satellite campuses of the College of Education, fully accredited to offer undergraduate programmes in Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Expansion

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana¸ Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo said the establishment of the various city campuses was the university’s aspiration to extend its premium services to students in the other regions across the country.

This, she noted, would enable university authorities to have manageable numbers across the campuses to ensure quality teaching, learning and effective lecturing to nurture the students into citizens who would be responsive to both local and global challenges.

Unfortunately, the university turned down the application of many qualified individuals who wanted to study at the Legon campus because of inadequate facilities and resources to support a large intake.

“We, therefore, encourage prospective students and guardians to seriously consider the programmes we offer at the various city campuses to increase their chances of gaining admission to pursue a programme with the premium university”, she said.

Female Enrolment

The university, according to Prof. Amfo, admitted 11,246 students for the 2023-2024 academic year and out of the number, 56.6 per cent were females and 46.4 per cent were males, an indication of the university policy and commitment to affirmative action for women.

She promised to create a world-class city campus with a full complement of facilities and services to support the realisation of the vision and mission of the university. The vice chancellor applauded the city campus implementation team for their commitment and urged them to ensure the campuses were well-resourced and nurtured into a semi-autonomy state.

The Acting Principal of the Kumasi City Campus, Prof. Edward Nketiah-Amponsah encouraged the newly admitted students to be protective in building a long-standing network that would provide mentorship and job opportunities after their education.

He urged the students to embrace the new beginnings with an open mind and to create an environment where critical thinking and excellence in diversity were celebrated with the needed support to succeed.

Challenges

A representative of the matriculation class, Tracy Afi Agossa, said accommodation was one of the main challenges facing them as most of them had to commute from the house to campus, thus putting financial constraints on them.

She appealed to management to consider putting up a hostel to ease the pressure on students.

The leadership of the fiery Commonwealth Hall in University of Ghana petitioned the government and the management of the university to solve the school’s growing accommodation crisis.

In their petition, the Junior Common Room (JCR) leadership of the exclusive male hall said “we are members of Commonwealth Hall…and are ready to follow this petition to the latter.”

The students have asked the recipients of their petition to respond within five days, lest they take further action.

Proffering solutions to the crisis, the petition asked the government to build more Halls of residence for students as more than 60% have to deal with their own housing issues.

They also want the management of the university to build more Halls and also green-light the building of annexes by existing Halls of residence.

Meanwhile, reports say the University plans on implementing a ‘freshmen first’ policy at the beginning of next academic year.

No sooner than the National Science and Maths Quiz took off had the much-awaited upsets began.

Apam Senior High handed an unexpected defeat to favourites, Winneba SHS, in one of the two opening contests.

The competition which was held at the New N Block at the University of Ghana, also featured Daboase Senior High and Technical School.

Winneba SHS, after giving giants, Wesley Girls SHS a run for their money at the one-eighth stage in 2018 and producing an impressive performance during the qualifiers, were tipped to win this contest but Apam SHS had other ideas.

They upstaged the favourites and won the contest as if it was child’s play.

Besides impressing throughout the contest, Apam came close to scoring a perfect score in Round Three, known as Problem of the Day. They scored nine out of the ten available points.

The Problem, however, gave problems to their challengers as Winneba SHS and Daboase SHTS only earned two points each.

Apam SHS ended the contest with 62 points. Winneba trailed with 21 points while the underdogs, Daboase SHTS crushed out with just five points.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has admonished students of the University of Ghana to use their youthful exuberance to tackle and find ways to curb the influx of robbery incidents on campus.

According to him, students must not let thieves harass them on campus since they can solve and deal with the situation permanently without expecting help from the police or university authorities or government.

He explained that in order for the robbery incidents to stop drastically, the students must take advantage of their youthful age to think proactively and act on them since they are the rightful people to put a stop to it.

And for that to be achieved, the students must also think like thieves to know how to salvage the situation.

Using his life as an example, Rawlings said he always fought for what was right at his youthful age because he had the strength to do so and is shocked the youth of today are inactive hence making people take advantage of their vulnerability.

Speaking at the 3rd Revolutionary Lecture Series at the University of Ghana Business School on the theme “Developing a National Character for Sustainable Good Governance”, Rawlings said “I’ve engaged in so many actions since I was quite small…but until then right from school if I had any reason to believe someone was doing the wrong thing, I would fight my way…. The average age you being around here will be about 23, 22, 24? In terms of energy, tenacity etc, nothing beats that age”.

“And you sit down and allow cowardly thieves to come and harass you? And make you feel uncomfortable? No, no, you can deal with this. Don’t expect the police to come and do it for you. You can deal with this, just think like a thief too. You’re young men, they should never dream of coming to do this on campus like this. You can do it”.

Students of the University of Ghana in recent times get attacked by robbers on their way to their hostels from lectures or the library.

The stretch from the Pentagon-James Topp Nelson Yankah hall has become a notorious hide-out for criminals who often inflict wounds on students, rob them of their personal effects and sometimes attempt to rape female victims.

Early this month, a final year psychology student of the university was attacked by robbers. The students in the campaign; #MakeUGaSafePlaceAgain mounted pressure on authorities of the university to take the necessary steps to immediately address the recent state of insecurity in the school.

Management however reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the institution is made safe for academic work and provided streetlights on the stretch for them.

But former President Rawlings is of the view that the students are the only ones capable of bringing an end to the robbery.

Management of the University of Ghana, Legon says adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of students and all workers on the university campus.

This was contained in a statement signed by the university’s Director of Public Affairs Stella A. Amoa who noted that measures put in place will go a long way to keep all safe on campus.

“Management would like to inform members of the University Community, parents and the general public that a number of safety and security measures have been put in place to enhance security on campus both in the short and long term.”

The assurance from management of the university is on the back of an attack on a student last Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Suspected robbers attacked one Daniel Osei who is a final year Psychology student at the university.

The student who sustained cutlass wounds was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for treatment.

Addressing the issue, the university’s management noted that they are carrying out investigations into the attack.

“The Ghana Police and the National Security, assisted by the University security are conducting investigations into the incident. A report will be issued once investigations are completed and the University receives a report.”

Management also said a team of University officials led by the Vice-Chancellor and representatives from the student leadership have visited the victim at the hospital, and that he is stable and responding to treatment.

They assured that the student leadership is being closely worked with to ensure that everyone is kept safe on the university campus.

A level 400 student of the University of Ghana named Osei, has been attacked by armed men believed to be robbers along the road leading from Pentagon to Evandy hostel situated on the University of Ghana campus.

The victim who was said to be butchered mercilessly, thereby sustaining several cutlass wounds on his head by these unknown assailants has been admitted to the 37 military hospital and currently undergoing treatment according to sources.

Reports also suggested the armed men managed to flee after the incident.

Some individuals, reacting to the incident on twitter, recalled similar instances where they have grappled with unwarranted attacks by criminals who constantly attack them on that particular road and also the road heading from UPSA close to PRESEC at night.

The situation, according to them has seen little or no change, despite police intervention leaving them at the mercy of these bandits.

Meanwhile, Legon’s SRC President, Sylvester Amoako who has since responded to the incident says their team would visit the victim early tomorrow morning at the hospital to find out what actually transpired.

He has also guaranteed to enter into talks with the school’s management to plan on how security patrol can be deployed into such ‘dangerous’ areas so as to prevent the future occurrence of related events.
