A total of 285 school children in Effutu Municipality have within the past four months been schooled on issues bordering on peace in the country.

The educational campaign carried out at separate forums was organized by Effutu Directorate of the National Peace Council under the theme “Promoting direct and structural peace in Effutu Municipality”.

Mr. Charles Ohene-Amoah, Executive Secretary, and Ms. Elizabeth Boduwah, Senior Administrator of the Peace Council, addressed the students and highlighted issues on conflict prevention, kidnapping and premarital sex among others.

They stressed on the need for Student to tolerate the views of their colleagues and strive to live peacefully with all others at all times.

“The world is full of people from different backgrounds who speak various languages and also follow diverse customs and religion,” they noted, and added that, it was important for children to learn to accept others from an early stage to become morally strong and have respect for others.

They told the children that when peace prevailed, businesses thrive and there was prosperity, better socialization and emotional stability. The peace officers urged the students to be tolerant at all times so that other people would be able to express their views freely at all times. “Research shows that school children, who take part in peace education programmes, possess sufficient skills and knowledge in conflict analysis and they are able to identify the causes of conflict as well as communicate the methods for conflict resolution”.

Such children, they indicated, were able to live at peace with others and helped in creating a peaceful environment by becoming peer counselors at school and at home.

On kidnapping, the speakers advised the children to be extremely careful when they were approached by unknown people or group of persons and urged them to scream for help when in danger.

They must be bold to report the actions of suspected person or groups to their parents, teachers and the law enforcement agencies.

The students were advised to stay away from premarital sex, remain focused and make studies their main occupation to help build a brighter future.

Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday lauded the peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians in the country.

He commended leaders of the two religions for the social cohesion and asked Muslims in particular to intensify prayers in this season of Ramadan to deepen the prevailing national peace as the country prepares for Election 2020.

The Vice President gave the commendation when he joined hundreds of Muslim worshippers at the Sampa Central Mosque in the Jaman North District of the Bono Region as part of his two-day visit to Bono and Ahafo Regions.

Accompanied by some Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, the Vice President was in the two Regions to interact with Muslim communities as they observe the Islamic annual tradition of month-long prayers and fasting.

Vice President Bawumia noted that issues of religion and faith were very sensitive, saying it was extremely difficult for Muslims and Christians elsewhere to co-exist and thus the Zongo communities in particular must be applauded. He reiterated the development of the Zongo communities remained one of the major priorities of the government, assuring that each of the 1,080 Zongo communities in the country would benefit from the Zongo Development Fund. This, the Vice President added would be a reality if the Zongo communities supported and voted to retain the government in Election 2020.

Responding to an appeal by Alhaji Seidu Adams, the Jaman North District Chief Imam, Dr. Bawumia assured that the government would tar the three-kilometer Sampa town roads to befit a District capital.

He added that the government would also consider the establishment of an Islamic Senior High School in the area for many of the Zongo youth to benefit from the free SHS programme.

The Vice President presented 25 bags of rice and 25 bags of sugar and undisclosed sum of money to the leadership of the Zongo community in Sampa.

Alhaji Adams had earlier appealed to the Vice President to also help address the poor water situation in the area.
