GSTS has progressed to the knockout stages of the ongoing National Science and Maths Quiz after a convincing win Thursday evening.

The 2012 champions were expected to shrug off their two challengers, Zion College, and Aduman SHS and they wasted no time in exerting their weight on the contest.

At the end of the five-round contest, GSTS boasted of 54 points.

The two schools trailing the over-dog would cherish a chance to participate at the finals but their performance was less than challenging.

The sum of Aduman SHS’s 25 points and Zico’s 22 does not even match the victor’s tally.

After taking the lead in Round One, GSTS grabbed the contest by the neck and did not let go until the final whistle.

Round Three, known as Problem of the Day is where some underdogs use to change the fortune of the game but it was not so for Zico or Aduman SHS.

Of the available 10 points, GSTS amassed five while they chasers got three points apiece.

The True/False session could have been a setback for GSTS but it wasn’t. A wrong answer is minus two points but they finished on top.

They finished it off in the final round and carried the day.

Ola Girls’ Senior High will once again have to rely on the results from other contests to secure a qualification to the one-eighth stage of the National Science and Maths Quiz.

The Ho-based school failed to defeat Central Region’s Edinaman Senior High in Thursday’s first contest and must wait to be counted among the 18-high-scoring losing schools.

Edinaman on their part have booked their spot in the next stage after finishing the contest with 45 points.

The Central Region school has defended their brilliant performance from the regional qualifiers. They scored 54 points to bring them to the prelims, same tally as giants, St. Augustine’s College.

They now have to sharpen all blunt edges for the next challenge, facing a seeded school at the knock-out stage.

The progression of Ola, even if they make it to the one-eighth stage, cannot be called as they would be facing a seeded school plus a school that won their contest.

Ahantaman Girls’ SHS who were also part of the contest barely survived the heat of the two leading schools and ended the contest with just 20 points.

With the tallies of the current 18 high-scoring-losing schools, Ahantaman is already out.

A lot of fans seeking an upset had their bets on them, but Sonrise High School has failed to live up to their 2018 heroics in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

As debutants last year, the Ho-based school raised eyebrows by defeating giants, Opoku Ware SHS before suffering defeat at the one-eighth stage.

Wednesday’s contest, however, was a survival tussle for them as Pope John SHS and Minor Seminary, seeking to restore lost glory, took no chances in shrugging off Sonrise and underdogs, Adventist Girls’ SHS.

After a steady start to the contest, Pojoss displayed a splendid performance in Round 2, known as the Speed Race.

A question is given to all the three schools simultaneously and it’s all up to “who got it right and who got it right quickest?”

That put the contest beyond a point of no return and they added more to it by getting the highest score in Round Three, Problem of the Day.

The Koforidua based school which has won the competition once continued their assault to finish the contest with 57 points. Sonrise garnered 27 points while Adventist Girls’ SHS finished last with 21 points.

This should mark the turning point for Pope John SHS after a few bad records. In 2018, they failed to win their preliminary stage contest, suffering defeat at the hands of St. Francis Xavier SHS. They however made it to the one-eighth stage as one of the high-scoring losing schools.

They however, failed to take advantage of that and were eliminated at the one-eighth stage.

This win should set the path for their return to glory.

St Augustine’s College has begun a strong campaign in the National Science and Maths Quiz.

The Cape Coast school handed Bolgatanga Senior High and Walewale Senior High a defeat to remember in the second contest for Tuesday.

St. Augustine’s, one time winners of the competition slipped in 2017 with a preliminary stage defeat and also failed to qualify for the 2018 competition.

Their prospects were on the fence in this contest considering one of the opponents; Bolga is the Upper East Region’s best.

But Augusco took no chances.

Right from the proverbial first whistle, they showed the two competitors from the Northern part of the country that they are Augusco, a name and a title in one.

In Round 2, known as the speed race, the Cape Coast giants answered most of the riddles thrown at the schools simultaneously.

They put the icing on the cake by scoring a perfect score in Round 3, known as Problem of the Day. Their reward for that feat is a GHS500 prize from Prudential Life Insurance.

They are the first school to win it after its introduction in 2019.

After maintaining that tempo to end the contest, St Augustine’s ended with 76 points followed by Bolga SHS with 22 points. Walewale fell behind with 18 points.

Augusco are through to the 1/8 stage of the contest while the two losing schools would have to wait for the prelims to be over, hopefully, their scores would be among the 18 highest scoring losers and they would progress too.

No sooner than the National Science and Maths Quiz took off had the much-awaited upsets began.

Apam Senior High handed an unexpected defeat to favourites, Winneba SHS, in one of the two opening contests.

The competition which was held at the New N Block at the University of Ghana, also featured Daboase Senior High and Technical School.

Winneba SHS, after giving giants, Wesley Girls SHS a run for their money at the one-eighth stage in 2018 and producing an impressive performance during the qualifiers, were tipped to win this contest but Apam SHS had other ideas.

They upstaged the favourites and won the contest as if it was child’s play.

Besides impressing throughout the contest, Apam came close to scoring a perfect score in Round Three, known as Problem of the Day. They scored nine out of the ten available points.

The Problem, however, gave problems to their challengers as Winneba SHS and Daboase SHTS only earned two points each.

Apam SHS ended the contest with 62 points. Winneba trailed with 21 points while the underdogs, Daboase SHTS crushed out with just five points.

This year’s edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz Sci-Tech Fair comes off today and tomorrow, Saturday June 15 at the GCB Lecture Hall, University of Ghana.

The fair provides the platform where young innovators present their science project results in the form of a report, display board, and models they have invented.

They were some concerns by lovers and followers of the National Science and Maths Quiz competition over the years that the focus of the programme was largely theoretical and as such limited what students could offer with regards to innovation. The Sci-Tech Fair is clearly an outstanding initiative by the organisers of the programme.

The initiative forms part of measures by Primetime, producers of the National Science and Maths Quiz and Science Festival, in offering students the opportunity of putting into practice the theories they were taught in the class room.

There have been remarkable improvements with regards to the organisation and patronisation of the two-day event since its inception in 2017.

The maiden edition was held on June 27 & 28, 2017 at the University of Ghana, Legon. The St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School emerged winner of the 2017 edition by developing a computer central processing unit that can be used for educational purposes. Known as the HexEduBox, it was developed by a team of six by who used mobile phone microprocessors for their device which can function as a central processing unit CPU.

The second edition which was held last year opened with over 35 exhibitors largely drawn from second cycle institutions across the country. All the participating schools received a certificate of participation with Mfantsipim School, Two Roses International School, and St. Monica’s SHS taking cash prizes for their exceptional projects. Individual exhibitors also received cash prizes.

A young innovator, Seth Wangara, won the hearts of many in last year’s edition with his solar transformer which powers his home in Adobewura Number 2, a town closer to Sefwi Bekwai in the Western Region.

With support from the Ghana Oil Company Limited, the 2019 edition of the fair commences today. Young innovators, teachers, students and fans of the NSMQ are encouraged to pass by.

The list of competing schools in the 2019 edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz has been announced during this year’s launch at the British Council hall. There are a total of 135 Senior High Schools, across the length and breadth of Ghana, who will be competing for the ultimate prize.

Will this year’s competition give a chance for the first girls’ school to win or will we see another boys’ school emerging as the winner again? Maybe this could be another opportunity for a second mixed school to lift the trophy. Intelligence will tell! Time will tell!
