Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi have kicked against moves by the school authorities to control sports betting on campus.

The Information Technology Department has already blocked access to all betting sites on the university’s internet wifi system, pending a final decision by the academic board.

Acting University Relations Officer, James Oberko says the practice is becoming pervasive at the expense of academic work.

“The subject is at various level of discussion but the decision has not been taken so we cannot talk about the issue in the light of it being a decision by the university,” he told Joy News.

According to him, the subject of deliberation has been gambling and its effects on students.

The action is to ensure strict adherence with the order consequently, KNUST has decided against accepting donation or sponsorship from companies engaged or related to sports betting and gambling.

“It [betting] has reached levels that we cannot be proud of as a university set up to train minds and people to be responsible citizens for the nation in the future. However, gambling has taken a huge toll on their academic work and that is of concern to us,” Mr Oberko stated.

In a shocking move, some students are however protesting the decision to control the wifi system.

They say it is an attempt to block them from using the wifi since they can use their private means to bet.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is set to admit over 23,000 extra students in 2020.

According to management, the university is well-positioned to admit more students from the first batch of Free SHS students.

There have been growing concerns over whether the various tertiary institutions would be able to absorb all the students coming out of the second cycle institutions.

Responding to this, Acting University Relations Officer, James Oberko said KNUST will have no problem admitting more students.

He said the university has expanded its infrastructure and will be in a position to admit 23, 000 more students next year (2020).

Currently, KNUST has a student population of just about 55,000, Mr. Oberko further revealed.

“KNUST set off to increase access to the University by expanding its infrastructure and as you’ve seen from our visit, we’ve done a lot and we’ve a lot. We are almost close to finalizing it and when all the infrastructure are set, KNUST will be in a position to admit about 23,000 more students,” he said following a media tour to inspect some infrastructural projects in the school.

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has banned gambling and sports betting on campus.

Students found engaging in the practice will now be rusticated for a year.

The decision was arrived after an academic board meeting held last Thursday, May 2.

A source at the board of the school told Ultimate FM, “the University or any of its department hereafter shall not accept any donation or sponsorship package from any betting company for any program on the Science and technology campus.”

“The University Information Technology Service (UITS) has hence been instructed to block all betting websites from the University’s WIFI accessible to all students’’.

Management believes gambling among students on campus is gaining roots and distracting them from their core objective.

Sports betting is fast becoming a major stay among Ghanaian youth with many investing their finances and emotions in the English Premier League.
