“But first … let me thank God.”

These were the white words displayed on a black t-shirt that the head coach of the NBA championship Boston Celtics wore during the celebration ceremony following the team’s victory. In speaking on his emotions following his championship win Coach Joe Mazzulla said, “First of all, the most important thing for us, for me, is our faith, and we have the number one fans in the world.” He also noted that being in this position to coach this team was “a blessing. I don’t deserve it but because of grace I’m here.”

These types of actions that are focused on Mazzulla’s Catholic faith are not new if you’ve been following his journey. So much of his words and actions are centered on God. The country, the world and his team have taken notice. In November 2022, after a game in Boston attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales, a reporter asked him if was able to meet “the royal family.” Mazzulla responded, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph? I’m only familiar with one royal family. I don’t know too much about that one. But hopefully, they’re Celtics fans.”

Mazzulla has consistently been a man who is upfront with his faith and the Celtics organization and players know this to be the case as well. He also recently said, “If we win the championship this year, we’re flying to Jerusalem and we’re walking from Jericho to Jerusalem.” He noted that his trip there several years ago had radically transformed his faith.

There are many other faith moments and actions that we could reference for the head coach. What is amazing is that he also seems to have influenced his players. There is no way we can say this for certain, but it is interesting that so many of the Celtics players would be so open about their faith in God directly following their championship victory.

The virtues of faith, hope and love appear to be a part of the way they speak and carry themselves. Several important contributors to the team spoke freely and clearly about their love of God and seemed to immediately praise their teammates and coaches over themselves.

Jayson Tatum, the leader of the team and top scorer, said, “First of all, God is the greatest. Not because we won but to put me in positions to maximize my God-given ability. To surround me with these guys and my family. This is an incredible feeling.”

Tatum wasn’t nearly referencing the phrase, “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” This is something many players say and is a great way to be upfront about one’s faith. However, Tatum was different. He was more specific. God is not good because he won the game but because God enables Jayson to be the man and athlete that he is. God is the source and center, along with his family and team.

Jaylen Brown, another key start for the Celtics said the following in his post-game interview: “For me, my faith is most high and in just believing in my teammates and my coaching staff and just being grateful.”

Again, Brown focused on others instead of himself. He also noted that being thankful for all that he has been given is critical. His relationship with God is the clear number one. Placing that relationship where it needs to be gives him the vision of gratitude, no matter what happens.

Finally, Al Horford, the Celtics veteran, chanted “Gloria a Dios. Gloria a Dios. Glory, glory, glory to the Lord,” to the crowd and reporters following the Celtics championship win. Amid all of the confetti and celebration, he was smiling and gave God the notice. All of this should bring one to see that God is real and he is everything. Horford’s words were the shortest but were given with such power.

The Mazzulla effect was so clear to me watching all of these players be vocal about their faith.

During the postseason last year, the Celtics were knocked out of the playoffs and did not meet their championship expectations. When they were down in their series, Mazzulla was honest about how he spent some of his time. In a press conference, he said that he had visited three girls under the age of 21 years old who had terminal cancer. He wanted to be with them and spend some time with them. He said that being with these girls and seeing them still smile gave him a new perspective on life. He saw that the game was not the most important thing. At the end of our lives, it is faith and love that remains.

It sounds like this head coach has got it right. Keep God first and everything else will fall into place. It also appears that he has transmitted that truth to his players. Now, they follow his faith lead.

We should as well.

Nine National Football League teams have refrained from mentioning LGBT pride month on social media this year after other companies have experienced financial consequences as a result of their promotion of LGBT ideology.

Seven days into June, which LGBT activists recognize as LGBT pride month every year, slightly more than one-quarter of the NFL teams haven’t made any reference to the occasion. In the past, professional sports teams and other notable corporations have taken a lot of heat for wholeheartedly embracing it.

NFL teams whose X accounts have not brought up anything related to pride month in the past week are: Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans.

The Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, New England Patriots, New York Giants, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have all sent out at least one tweet acknowledging pride month.

Additionally, the Green Bay Packers sent out a tweet Tuesday declaring “Football is for everyone” but did not explicitly mention pride month, while the Jacksonville Jaguars sent out a similar post.

In addition to posting a tweet acknowledging the first day of pride month, the Los Angeles Chargers changed their profile picture on X to the team’s logo emblazoned in the rainbow colors that have come to symbolize LGBT ideology. The Philadelphia Eagles also changed the profile picture on their X account to a picture of the team’s eagle logo bathed in rainbow colors, while the Washington Commanders now have a profile picture on X of their “W” logo in rainbow colors.

The Commanders also sent out a tweet at the beginning of pride month, like most of the other teams have done. The Detroit Lions plugged the team’s “Pride Month apparel collection” in a June 1 tweet.

The handful of NFL teams opting not to promote pride month, at least so far, comes as major companies’ embrace of LGBT ideology has led to backlash among the American public. A survey from Bloomberg published last year found that “references to ‘Pride Month’ in filings, presentations and transcripts from April to June at more than 900 of the largest US companies dropped almost 40% from this time last year, the first decline in five years.”

One of the most notable examples of a company experiencing financial losses as a result of its promotion of LGBT ideology is Target, which saw its stock plummet last year after the big box store plugged an LGBT Pride collection and a “tuck-friendly” swimsuit designed to make it easier for trans-identified men to conceal their genitalia while wearing women’s swimsuits. Target lost $9.3 billion in market value and recorded a 12.6% drop in stocks as a result of backlash to its efforts to advance LGBT ideology.

Christian worship leader and activist Sean Feucht is taking action in response to anti-Israel protests at well-known campuses such as Columbia University and New York University. In defense of the Jewish people, Feucht plans to host the United For Israel March on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. ET near Columbia’s New York City campus. “Every Christian and person of faith across America should be absolutely horrified at what we’re seeing take place right now on these university campuses that have become hotbeds for antisemitism and hatred of the Jews — an annihilation of an entire nation,” he told CBN news.

Feucht added, “This is essentially a response to that and it’s rallying the church, it’s rallying Jewish leaders, it’s rallying organizations that want to say … ‘This is America. These are our universities and campuses in our cities. We’re not going to stand for this.’” He likened the event to the rallies he held across the U.S. in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Faithwire. Feucht recalled going to places of anarchy and chaos at that time and bringing forth “worship, and prayer, and unity, and baptisms of revival.”

Ultimately, being present amid anger and division “changed the entire environment,” Feucht said. He hopes that the United For Israel March would likewise change the atmosphere. “More than anything, I feel like this gives hope to America,” he said. “There are people that are going to rise up with courage and boldness, that are going to say, ‘Enough. We’re going to stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters; we’re going to respond to the command in Genesis 12 that says, ‘I’ll bless those who bless you. I’ll curse those that curse you.’”

Feucth said the event will feature prayer, worship, and the “church rising up to stand up against evil, and darkness, and hate.” He also compared some of the current anti-Israel sentiment to the 1930s, when the ideologies that were taking root resulted in the Holocaust. “We understand that this is the work of the enemy,” he said. “We’re coming to bring the light; we’re coming to say we’re not going to be pushed around and we’re going to join with our Jewish brothers and sisters.”

Feucht also said that the current chaos that was caused by Hamas’ Oct. 7th attack against Israel and the war that followed is a sober reminder for Christians that “we are in the last days.”

“These are the end times … we’re living in the midst of it,” he said.

Nigerian chess champion Tunde Onakoya returned home to Lagos on Wednesday to a hero’s welcome.

Onayoka, who set a world record for the longest chess marathon last week in New York City, arrived in  Murtala Muhammed airport in Lagos on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old raised $150,000 for children’s education across Africa through the record attempt.

“I feel really proud of this moment, because I get to share it with so many people,” he said.

A new record

He had set out to play the royal game for 58 hours but continued until he reached 60 hours at about 12:40 a.m. Saturday, surpassing the current chess marathon record of 56 hours, 9 minutes and 37 seconds, achieved in 2018 by Norwegians Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad.

The Guinness World Records has yet to confirm the record, which can sometimes take weeks.

Onakoya played against Shawn Martinez, an American chess champion, in line with Guinness World Record guidelines that any attempt to break the record must be made by two players who would play continuously for the entire duration.

A charitable goal

The Nigerian champion’s parents and several of his supporters greeted him enthusiastically at the airport, where he was escorted by armed guards.

One of Onakoya’s protégés was there to greet him, too.

Ayomide Ojo Emmanuel said he was homeless before Onakoya met him.

“He found me under the bridge in Osodi, where I was homeless,” the 20-year-old said. “I didn’t have anything, I didn’t have a life, I wasn’t ambitious. So, he gave me life.”

Onakoya founded his charity Chess in Slums Africa in 2018, aiming to help educate 1 million children in slum communities across the continent.

He said his main goal in breaking the record was to raise awareness for the organization’s mission.

Augusta National Golf Club stood as a verdant cathedral, its meticulously manicured fairways and towering pines bearing witness to the crowning of a new champion. On April 14, 2024, amidst the azaleas and dogwoods of Georgia, Scottie Scheffler of the United States etched his name into golfing lore, claiming the coveted Masters trophy in a display of skill, determination, and unwavering resolve.

For Scottie Scheffler, the journey to Augusta was a culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and unyielding passion for the game. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Scottie’s love affair with golf began at an early age, nurtured by hours spent on the greens of local courses, his dreams fueled by the echoes of past champions who had graced the storied grounds of Augusta National.

As he strode confidently onto the first tee on that fateful Sunday morning, Scottie carried with him the weight of expectation, but also the unwavering belief in his abilities honed through countless hours of practice and sacrifice. The pressure of competing on golf’s grandest stage was palpable, yet Scottie remained undeterred, his focus unwavering as he navigated the treacherous fairways and undulating greens of Augusta National.

With each swing of the club, Scottie showcased the precision and finesse that had propelled him to the upper echelons of the golfing world. His drives found the fairways with unerring accuracy, his approach shots nestled close to the pins with surgical precision, and his putter danced delicately across the greens, sinking birdie putts with the poise of a seasoned veteran.

But it was not just Scottie’s sublime ball-striking that captured the imagination of the galleries that lined the fairways of Augusta National. It was his unshakeable resolve, his steely determination in the face of adversity, and his unwavering belief in himself that set him apart from his competitors.

As the final putt dropped on the 18th green, sealing his victory and etching his name into the annals of Masters history, Scottie’s emotions overflowed. With tears of joy streaming down his face, he embraced his caddie, his family, and his supporters, each embrace a testament to the countless sacrifices made along the journey to this moment of triumph.

And as Scottie stood before the adoring crowds, Masters trophy held aloft in triumph, he knew that this victory was about more than just golf. It was a testament to the power of perseverance, the strength of the human spirit, and the belief that with hard work and dedication, anything is possible.

Scottie Scheffler dedicated his second Masters win in three years to God, declaring that “victory was secure on the cross” as he secured the victory at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday.

In the days and weeks that followed, Scottie’s win would be celebrated far and wide, his name forever etched alongside the likes of Palmer, Nicklaus, and Woods in the pantheon of Masters champions. But for Scottie Scheffler, the greatest reward was not the green jacket or the adulation of the crowds, but the knowledge that he had achieved his dream through sheer grit, determination, and an unwavering belief in himself.

Visitors to the Barbican centre in London will see swathes of pink and purple across the building this spring rather than the usual concrete exterior thanks to the Ghanian artist Ibrahim Mahama.

His large-scale public art piece, Purple Hibiscus—made of 2,000 square metres of woven cloth—covers the lakeside façade of the brutalist structure, creating a vivid contrast against the grey building and sky.

The work was sewn together by more than 1,000 weavers and seamstresses at the Aliu Mahama sports stadium in Tamale, Ghana (an accompanying film gives an idea of the scale of the work, showing a plethora of craftspeople knitting the piece together on the football pitch).

“The period for the commission was quite short—roughly seven months to produce the entire work so we had to get a lot of people in order to get the work. I had to rent the stadium also; the days when they weren’t playing football games, we were playing [art] games!” Mahama tells The Art Newspaper, outlining how the commission helped bolster the local economy. “There is a lot of unemployment; we had to use the money that came from the commission to pay these people over seven months.”

When the work is deinstalled in August, the entire piece will go back to Ghana. “There are certain projects I did such as the National Theatre [the venue in Accra was covered in a blanket of jute sacks]… so I think it might be interesting to use the material to wrap this building.”

Mahama has also incorporated into the fabric more than 130 traditional Ghanaian robes known as batakaris, which are handed down through families across numerous communities. These garments reflect “Mahama’s deep interest in the life cycles of textiles and what can be learnt from the historical memories embedded within them”, a statement says.

“I’ve never made a work in this colour and on this scale,” Mahama says. “When I came here, Shanay [Jhaveri, head of visual arts at the Barbican] was telling me about the history of the site; they used to sell rags here [in the Cripplegate district] before the Second World War.

I’ve always believed materials contain spirits and souls. So I thought, if they were selling rags here, then historically the site still contains those spirits in a way. I thought why not work with these materials from Ghana which have been worn over the body and contain the sweat of the body.”

He highlights the global, geo-political aspect of the Barbican project. “The threads [for the covering] are coming from China… I was interested in what [the work] represents on a global scale in terms of politics… art has that responsibility and power—[we are] able to take something that seems very local and then open up the connections within it on a global stage.”

Mahama’s piece forms part of the exhibition Unravel: The Power of Politics & Textiles in Art (until 26 May) which has sparked controversy after two collectors, and the artists Yto Barrada and Cian Dayrit, removed works from the show over the Barbican’s decision to cancel a talk on Palestine and the Holocaust.

Asked about the boycott, Mahama says: “I am coming from ground zero… a lot of these histories [linked to the Global South] are tied to debt and these debts all come back to Europe. I would say that we should have boycotted Europe a long time ago because the politics in Europe has put the Global South in a bad way [condition]… I want to further understand; art is not about withdrawal but about re-inserting yourself, even as problematic as things are, and then within that go much deeper into the politics.”

Mahama is having a moment; last month he won the inaugural Sam Gilliam Award, a prize created last year by Dia Art Foundation and the Sam Gilliam Foundation in honour of the late artist’s legacy (Mahama will receive US$75,000 and feature in a public programme at Dia in autumn of this year). Meanwhile, Mahama will present a new body of work at the Fruitmarket gallery in Edinburgh later this year (22 June-6 October).

The president of Rwanda, whose police force has asked the country’s people to restrict football-related activities during the 30-year anniversary of the Rwanda massacre, is facing questions after flying to the UK and watching Arsenal play Bayern Munich.

Paul Kagame visited on Tuesday 9 April to watch the Champions League match in north London. Before the match, he visited Rishi Sunak at No 10 Downing Street, after giving civil servants just a few days’ notice of his visit. They discussed the UK’s deportation deal, which aims to send asylum seekers to Kigali to be processed there.

The Rwanda national police’s website tells Rwandan they should withdraw from celebratory and sporting events in the week after the 30th commemoration of the 1994 genocide, which took place on 7 April.

According to the website, “restricted activities during the commemoration week include projecting football matches, sports competitions, betting games, concerts, theatres and playing music not related to the commemoration; wedding and other mass celebrations”.

A spokesperson for the Rwandan government has rejected the criticism, saying that the police website is “wrong” and does not reflect the Rwandan government’s policy.

However, Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, an opposition leader in Rwanda, said: “It is understandable that the people in Rwanda and abroad question the fact the president went to watch a football match during the period of mourning for the victims of the genocide against Tutsi – especially since the authorities here in Rwanda had issued directives during this period. It creates confusion among Rwandans,” she said.

Kagame, 66, has been at the heart of Kwibuka, the Rwandan word for remembrance, which aimed to pay tribute to the more than 1 million men, women and children who were massacred over a 100-day period.

He has also been vocal of his support for Arsenal on social media, with his posts on X about the north London club dating back to 2011.

His country sponsors the Visit Rwanda sponsorship deal that covers Arsenal’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as the tourist board’s agreement with Bayern.

Home Office staff first learned of the visit five days before the match, sources said, while Downing Street regarded it as a surprise. “He was here to see the football and came in to see the prime minister to discuss a number of things including the Rwanda partnership including getting flights off the ground,” one No 10 source said.

After the Downing Street visit, Kagame was seen being driven to north London by an entourage of cars, escorted by two police motorbikes.

Kagame was last re-elected as president of Rwanda in 2017, having first taken office in 2000. He was elected to serve his seventh term with 98.8% of the vote, according to the Rwandan National Electoral Commission. Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that the election “took place in a context of very limited free speech or open political space”.

A number of key opposition figures have disappeared, or been murdered or kidnapped, inside and outside Rwanda. At least six Rwandans living in the UK have been given letters from special branch warning them that they face possible execution after they defied Kagame.

Kagame leads the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) party, which has been credited with helping to defeat the civilian and military authorities responsible for the killing campaign.

A Rwandan government spokesperson said the police appeared to be basing their demands on old guidance, which had since been updated. “[The Rwandan police] misspoke when they put that guidance up. In the past, these have been the rules, but as the country has moved on so have the guidelines,” the spokesperson said.

Sound engineer William Felton was saved from pornography addiction and depression to new life in Jesus in 2023 as a result of listening to Jackie Hill Perry record the Bible on audiobook. Perry revealed on Instagram Sunday that she had prayed for Felton throughout the recording process, and Felton shared how God transformed his heart.

“[Perry] being a servant, planted a seed and God began to water it and open my eyes,” Felton said in a post on Dec. 27. “I began to pray more and read the Bible for myself and God started to do a mighty work in me. One day in my room I just surrendered fully to the Lord and he filled me with his Holy Spirit.. i am redeemed in Christ now!!!!!”

“In that studio, I didn’t preach a sermon. I didn’t exegete a text. All I did was READ GOD’s WORD and that alone brought my guy from death and into life,” Perry said in the caption of a photo of her and Felton. “I say all of that to say, God doesn’t need antics to save souls. If you just give folks His word, you would be amazed at what He can do!”

Jackie Hill Perry Prays for Sound Engineer

Jackie Hill Perry is a Christian author, speaker and hip hop artist. Last year, she recorded an audio version of the Bible for Crossway. “Doing it in a studio meant I’d have an engineer there to make sure the sound and all of that was good. A particular task the engineer had to take on was reading the Bible along with me to ensure that I didn’t skip any words,” Perry explained. “Knowing this, I would pray before every session that God would use His word to do a work in the engineer’s heart.”

“This man right here worked alongside me while I read most of the major and minor prophets. Before each session, I prayed for him hoping that God would grant Him understanding since the prophets ain’t the easiest to make sense of sometimes,” Perry said. “On certain days, I’d pick his brain on what he thought about Amos or [Habakkuk] just to get a sense of where he was with it.”

In his December post, Felton described the state of his inner life before he took on the project with Perry. “Earlier this year, I had no thoughts of God in my mind,” he said. “I was chasing this music industry so hard this screen right in front of me was my god. A false idol. I was stuck in pornography addiction and was so depressed.”

Felton works for Patchwerk Recording Studios and “around March” was tasked with working with Perry as she recorded the Bible on audiobook. “I didn’t want to do it [at] first but I took a chance because I believed in God and figured this could be good for me to learn about the Bible more,” Felton said. However, “after months of us working I started to hate it, and dread it.”

In the electrifying world of professional basketball, Jaden Ivey was a force to be reckoned with. Known for his lightning-fast dribbling skills, impeccable shooting accuracy, and charismatic presence on and off the court, he had risen to become one of the NBA’s brightest stars.

But behind the glitz and glamour of his athletic prowess, there was a side to Jaden that few knew about. He was a devout Christian, deeply committed to his faith and passionate about sharing it with others. And it was this passion that led him to take a bold step one evening during a post-game press conference.

As reporters gathered around, eager to hear Jaden’s thoughts on the game, he began by expressing gratitude for his team’s victory. But then, in a sudden shift, he spoke with a fervor that caught everyone off guard.

“Before I talk about basketball,” Jaden began, his voice unwavering, “there’s something more important I need to share. Something that’s been weighing heavy on my heart.”

The room fell silent as Jaden launched into an impassioned speech about the return of Jesus Christ. He spoke of biblical prophecies, of signs and wonders heralding the end times, and of the urgent need for people to turn to God.

“Some may think I’m crazy for talking about this,” Jaden admitted, his eyes ablaze with conviction, “but I can’t stay silent about something as crucial as this. We’re living in tumultuous times, and I believe with all my heart that Jesus is coming back soon.”

As Jaden’s words filled the room, a sense of awe and reverence descended upon those present. Reporters, accustomed to hearing athletes speak only of wins and losses, found themselves captivated by the sincerity and passion in his voice.

But Jaden’s message didn’t stop there. In the days and weeks that followed, he used his platform as an NBA star to reach even more people with the message of hope and redemption. He spoke at churches, appeared on talk shows, and used social media to spread the word far and wide.

And while some criticized him for mixing sports with religion, many others were inspired by his courage and conviction. They admired his willingness to speak out on behalf of his faith, even in the face of potential backlash.

As the months went by, Jaden’s message continued to resonate with people from all walks of life. Many found comfort and solace in his words, while others were prompted to reexamine their own beliefs and priorities.

And then, one day, just as Jaden had proclaimed, Jesus Christ returned, ushering in a new era of peace and righteousness for all mankind. And though Jaden’s days on the basketball court eventually came to an end, his legacy as a bold preacher of the gospel lived on for generations to come.
