“But first … let me thank God.”

These were the white words displayed on a black t-shirt that the head coach of the NBA championship Boston Celtics wore during the celebration ceremony following the team’s victory. In speaking on his emotions following his championship win Coach Joe Mazzulla said, “First of all, the most important thing for us, for me, is our faith, and we have the number one fans in the world.” He also noted that being in this position to coach this team was “a blessing. I don’t deserve it but because of grace I’m here.”

These types of actions that are focused on Mazzulla’s Catholic faith are not new if you’ve been following his journey. So much of his words and actions are centered on God. The country, the world and his team have taken notice. In November 2022, after a game in Boston attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales, a reporter asked him if was able to meet “the royal family.” Mazzulla responded, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph? I’m only familiar with one royal family. I don’t know too much about that one. But hopefully, they’re Celtics fans.”

Mazzulla has consistently been a man who is upfront with his faith and the Celtics organization and players know this to be the case as well. He also recently said, “If we win the championship this year, we’re flying to Jerusalem and we’re walking from Jericho to Jerusalem.” He noted that his trip there several years ago had radically transformed his faith.

There are many other faith moments and actions that we could reference for the head coach. What is amazing is that he also seems to have influenced his players. There is no way we can say this for certain, but it is interesting that so many of the Celtics players would be so open about their faith in God directly following their championship victory.

The virtues of faith, hope and love appear to be a part of the way they speak and carry themselves. Several important contributors to the team spoke freely and clearly about their love of God and seemed to immediately praise their teammates and coaches over themselves.

Jayson Tatum, the leader of the team and top scorer, said, “First of all, God is the greatest. Not because we won but to put me in positions to maximize my God-given ability. To surround me with these guys and my family. This is an incredible feeling.”

Tatum wasn’t nearly referencing the phrase, “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” This is something many players say and is a great way to be upfront about one’s faith. However, Tatum was different. He was more specific. God is not good because he won the game but because God enables Jayson to be the man and athlete that he is. God is the source and center, along with his family and team.

Jaylen Brown, another key start for the Celtics said the following in his post-game interview: “For me, my faith is most high and in just believing in my teammates and my coaching staff and just being grateful.”

Again, Brown focused on others instead of himself. He also noted that being thankful for all that he has been given is critical. His relationship with God is the clear number one. Placing that relationship where it needs to be gives him the vision of gratitude, no matter what happens.

Finally, Al Horford, the Celtics veteran, chanted “Gloria a Dios. Gloria a Dios. Glory, glory, glory to the Lord,” to the crowd and reporters following the Celtics championship win. Amid all of the confetti and celebration, he was smiling and gave God the notice. All of this should bring one to see that God is real and he is everything. Horford’s words were the shortest but were given with such power.

The Mazzulla effect was so clear to me watching all of these players be vocal about their faith.

During the postseason last year, the Celtics were knocked out of the playoffs and did not meet their championship expectations. When they were down in their series, Mazzulla was honest about how he spent some of his time. In a press conference, he said that he had visited three girls under the age of 21 years old who had terminal cancer. He wanted to be with them and spend some time with them. He said that being with these girls and seeing them still smile gave him a new perspective on life. He saw that the game was not the most important thing. At the end of our lives, it is faith and love that remains.

It sounds like this head coach has got it right. Keep God first and everything else will fall into place. It also appears that he has transmitted that truth to his players. Now, they follow his faith lead.

We should as well.

A “Star Wars” spinoff is receiving negative attention from fans for pushing LGBT ideology in what has become a trend in recent adaptations of legendary franchises.

While “The Acolyte” premiered Tuesday, it has been clear since long before the series officially became available to the subscribers of Disney+ that the program was designed to appeal to a progressive audience. In an X post last year, the “Star Wars” fan account The Direct announced that “THE ACOLYTE has cast Abigail Thorn as Ensign Eurus, making her the first transgender actor to appear in a #StarWars series.”

Earlier this year, series creator Leslye Headland openly admitted to the goal behind the show in an interview that surfaced on X. “When I saw ‘Frozen’ as a grown-a– woman, I cried through the entire movie,” she recalled. “There was just something about the relationship between the sisters, the … devillainization of the classic kind of fairytale bad guy, you know, the concept of true love being between two sisters and not a heterosexual relationship … it just destroyed me completely.”

At that point, Headland said her desire was “to make something like this that is, you know, for lack of a better term, Disney, meaning something that like my parents would have allowed me to see when I was younger as a queer person, that I would have been able to understand a queer person.” She asserted that had such a program existed, she “would have had a completely different life.”

“I really was inspired by it and I was like ‘God, I would love to make a story like this,’” she added. “When I was developing this original idea to pitch to [production company Lucasfilm’s] Kathleen [Kennedy], I thought … you know it can’t just be that, you know, when you’re pitching ‘Star Wars’ you have to pull from what you know [‘Star Wars’ creator] George [Lucas] was also interested in.”

Headland saw an opportunity to create her “own new characters” who lived during a period of time in the “Star Wars” universe known as the “High Republic” or the “end of High Republic into prequels” that preceded the “Skywalker saga” that is at the center of the “Star Wars” franchise.

In a text message to The New York Times published last week, Headland proclaimed, “Anyone who engages in bigotry, racism or hate speech … I don’t consider a fan.”

A review of the first few episodes of “The Acolyte” posted to YouTube Tuesday night warned that the third episode of the series works to “completely redefine what ‘The Force’ is” and highlighted how “two mothers conceive twins” as part of the plot line. The video, posted by the account Geeks + Gamers, featured one fan of the franchise telling the others on the panel to “get ready for pronouns in Star Wars.”

A summary of “The Acolyte” created by the Internet Movie Database describes the show as a “Star Wars series that takes viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”

“The Acolyte” is not the first example of a new installment of a long-running franchise embracing LGBT ideology. In 2021, DC Comics announced on “National Coming Out Day” that “the life of Jon Kent, the Superman of Earth and son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane” would take a “bold new direction” in a then-unpublished version of the comic book series Superman: Son of Kal-El. The plot twist hyped by the comic book company involved the revelation of the main character as bisexual.

Actress Candace Cameron Bure recently explained the reason why she left the Hallmark Channel two years ago and has since moved to the Great American Family Channel. Bure, 48, announced in April 2022 that she was leaving the Hallmark Channel to join Bill Abbott, the former CEO of Crown Media, the Hallmark Channel’s parent company, at GAFC. On May 20, she hosted a Q&A on her Instagram story where one of her followers asked her about her departure, BeliefNet reports.

“It wasn’t so much about leaving as it was about an opportunity to grow a new network that puts faith and family at the forefront of its content,” Bure wrote in response. “I’m very proud of the work I did at Hallmark for 15 years and love all my friends there.”

When she left Hallmark two years ago, she explained to the wall Street Journal what her intentions were.

“My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them. I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians [who] love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.”

Bure, who was part of the hit 90s sitcom Full House, joined Hallmark in 2008 and went on to be part of 30 films with the channel. In 2022, however, she left amid the channel’s decision to air commercials from an LGBTQ+ wedding registry and event website, Zola.com. In response, conservative activist group One Million Moms put out a petition calling for Hallmark to take down the ads, which was eventually removed.

Under GAC, Bure has roles in several projects, including a new mystery movie franchise titled “The Ainsley McGregor Mysteries” and a new Christmas movie titled “A Christmas Less Traveled.” She also serves as a GAC executive with the company/

“I’m very excited to develop heartwarming family and faith-filled programming and make the kind of stories my family and I love to watch,” Bure said in a statement. “I am constantly looking for ways that I can inspire people to live life with purpose. GAC fits my brand perfectly; we share a vision of creating compelling, wholesome content for an audience who wants to watch programming for and with the whole family.”

Texas Pastor Matt Chandler of The Village Church in Flower Mound recently shared why he believes the “mark of the beast,” as mentioned in the Bible in Revelation 13, is “active even now.” In a Video posted to Instagram, Chandler spoke on the mark of the best and that people his age view it as a credit card, a phone, or a chip embedded in people’s hands. In his view, however, Chandler says that perspective is “to miss the point that’s being made” in Revelation.

“The perfect number is number seven, and so if seven is complete, six is incomplete,” he explained. “We also know that the number three means complete. And so 666, the mark of the beast, is really to show that the work of the enemy is completely—three sixes—incomplete. And so this is, really, what the enemy produces: complete incompleteness.”

The mark of the beast “is not Elon Musk putting something in our brains or something like that,” Chandler continued, noting the number 666 on people’s foreheads represents “ideological belief,” and the number on people’s hands depicts “the practice of that ideological belief.”

Chandler went on to contend that the mark of the beast is currently active in society.

“I think the way you’re even seeing this today,” he said, “is there are certain, especially in the business community now, ideological beliefs you must have in order to participate in the economy. And I think we’re going to see this get worse.”

“That means I believe the mark of the beast is active even now in this moment of history that we’re in,” he concluded.

As reported by Church Leaders, Chandler recently published his latest book, “ The Overcomes: GOD’S vision for you To Thrive in an Age of Anxiety and Outrage” which uses Revelation to outline how Christians can live in victory in the present time.

“Revelation read rightly doesn’t have you forget the present at the expense of the future,” Chandler told Dr. Ed Stetzer on The Stetzer Church Leaders Podcast in a recent interview. “It anchors you in future hope for present boldness.”

The same director who was behind the 2023 hit movie The Blind and the 2018 biblical film Paul, Apostle of Christ says his newest project, Angel Studios’ Sight, will inspire audiences to trust God through the trials of life. Sight (PG-13) tells the true-life story of a young Chinese boy who grows up with a dream to be a doctor but faces severe challenges and persecution when schools close during the Cultural Revolution of the 60s and 70s. That boy, Ming Wang, overcomes the odds during a move to America to become one of the world’s top eye doctors whose innovations restore sight to the blind. He also becomes a Christian.

It hits theaters May 24 and is being released by Angel Studios, the same studio that released Sound of Freedom. Director Andrew Hyatt said the film urges believers to ask: How does God work through the trials of life?

“We may not all have Ming’s past and the trials and tribulations that he went through, but we all have something that … we grow from, we learn from,” Hyatt told Crosswalk Headlines. “You get to this place in life where you look back, and all those trials have made you who God wanted you to be today.”

In Sight, Ming’s companion tells him: “The present is made possible by the past.” That theme has a biblical foundation, Hyatt said.

“Whatever trauma, whatever darkness, whatever hard things you’ve gone through — God’s molded something beautiful out of that and that’s allowing you to be who you are today, whether that’s a husband, a father, a mother, a wife. … I’m not saying that we’re asking for dark things or trauma in our life, but it happens.

“How do we grow from that and learn from that?” Hyatt asked.

In the film, Ming is beaten and watches as the young girl he wants to marry is kidnapped by cultural revolutionaries. When he travels to America as a young adult, he has only $50 to his name.

Hyatt was attracted to the story because of its “coming to faith” element. He also was attracted to its Asian-centric plot. His grandmother was an Iraqi Jew who moved to China when she was four.

“She grew up in Shanghai until the Japanese occupation of World War II started and they fled the country,” he said. “They came to America. And so growing up, there was always this very strong Chinese influence in my grandmother’s home and in my mother’s home. And so I always thought their story itself was really fascinating. But I just thought, there’s nobody that’s gonna let me make a film like that.”

He got his opportunity with Sight, which uses flashback scenes to tell the story of Ming’s past. It has an all-star cast, with Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear (As Good As it Gets, You’ve Got Mail) portraying Ming’s associate and actor Ben Wang — who is in the upcoming Karate Kid movie — playing a young Ming Wang. Like his previous films The Blind and Paul, Apostle of Christ, Hyatt believes Sight will inspire audiences. He got into filmmaking, he said, to help make a difference in the world.

“I love this medium because it allows me to share these incredible stories that I know if they’re prayerfully made, we truly believe that God can speak through them,” he told Crosswalk Headlines. “… I love that part of filmmaking — that we have this opportunity for an audience around the world to come sit in a dark theater and be exposed to these stories that hopefully just move their hearts.”

Sight is rated Rated PG-13 for violence and thematic material. (It contains no coarse language or sexuality.)

More than 34,000 young people made professions of faith during this year’s Winter Jam Christian concert tour, underscoring what the tour’s pastor says is Generation Z’s deep hunger for authenticity and truth. Launched in 1995, Winter Jam is an annual multi-city tour that is known for its expansive lineup — this year featured 10 artists, including Crowder and Lecrae — and its affordable admission ($15). It’s also known for its unapologetic gospel focus, with tour pastor Zane Black delivering a brief gospel presentation at the midway point each night.

This year, Winter Tour recorded some 34,500 first-time professions of faith from individuals who typed their information into an online form and then were paired up with a local church. (That is, if they did not come with a church group in the first place.) The digital platform is run by Gloo.

Many nights were sold out.

Generation Z, Black said, is “hungry for what’s real.”

“They are inundated with the counterfeit — whatever is edited, cropped, filtered,” Black told Crosswalk Headlines. “The digital age has pushed them so far into the world of AI that they long for something real. And so I think we have an opportunity within the church to present authentic, real truth in an age of [the] artificial and skeptic. There is a real God. There’s a Book that is true. And there’s a love that is life-changing, that’s tangible.”

The darker the culture grows, Black said, the more thirsty people are for truth.

Christians of Generation Z, he added, are “on fire.”

“There’s so many who are excited about sharing the life of Christ with their friends.”

Winter Jam has two purposes, Black said: 1) share the gospel and 2) encourage the faithful. Young believers who attend the concert can look around and tell themself, “I’m not alone,” he said.

Meanwhile, Black said he believes there is “more pressure on this [current] generation than ever before.” Much of it is driven by social media.

“They’re comparing themselves with all these false images,” he said. “… To me it comes down to really identity. Students are longing to know: ‘Who am I?’”

The church has an opportunity, he said.

“We have the hope of Jesus and the Word of God to say, ‘Here’s who God says you are — you are loved, you are chosen, you have purpose, no matter your past, no matter your future.

“Gen Z is hungry for that.”

Author and speaker Amanda Jenkins acknowledges that a Bible study on suffering isn’t likely a popular topic, but she adds that it can be life-changing. Jenkins, the lead creator of additional content for the hit series The Chosen and the wife of the series creator, Dallas Jenkins, is the co-author of the new Bible study God’s Goodness for The Chosen, which is a companion to Season 4 and explores how God uses suffering to bring about good in the lives of those He loves.

“While God doesn’t remove suffering even though we ask,” she told Crosswalk Headlines, “God’s goodness eclipses suffering. God’s goodness is bigger and more significant and more life-changing and life-stabilizing.”

Season 4 of The Chosen spotlights suffering more so than previous seasons when a character suffers a tragic death, and Jesus’ followers are left wondering why He didn’t intervene. Jenkins said that the Bible study’s eight lessons tackle that issue.

“We’re dealing with some of the harder questions,” she said.

The topic of suffering is personal for Jenkins.

“We have a daughter who’s chronically ill,” she told Crosswalk Headlines. “And so it’s really a double whammy of suffering. Because it’s hard for me that I’m watching her suffer, and I can’t stop it. And [God’s] not stopping it. And so what seems loving to me as her mom is not the thing He’s choosing, but He is love. So, how do you work that out? So those are the kinds of things that we talk all through the study about — what we want from God versus what we get from God.”

“But really, ultimately, when you’re stuck in grief for a long enough period of time, it takes a long time to start seeing His choices as being better than ours. It takes a long time to see the fruit of His choices sometimes.”

She co-authored the study with her husband and Douglas S. Huffman, professor of New Testament for Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in California. Each season of The Chosen includes a Bible study companion.

Jenkins says she sees suffering “differently” in light of writing the study.

“Instead of praying for relief, I’m learning to pray for more of God Himself — and the goodness that He gives through it and what He’s doing through it,” she said. “If He chose to release us today, I’d throw a party. But I’m learning to see suffering so much differently, which is cliche. Sufferers, since the dawn of time who suffer with the Lord, will say the same thing. I’m not saying something new. I’m just saying it’s new for me.”

Giant dinosaur skeletons welcome visitors at most natural history museums around the world. Television documentaries show us vivid reconstructions of their behavior and interactions, and several recent movies have made them famous movie stars. Recent research studies have led us to a greater understanding about dinosaurs and have revealed interesting aspects of these giants from the past who seem to live on in people’s imaginations. However, there is still much to learn about them and in this article we will review the main questions that students and teachers often raise about these creatures.

Were there really dinosaurs?

Photo 1: Tyrannosaurus rex “Sue”

Scientists have identified nearly a thousand different genera (types) of dinosaurs, although some are represented by so few bones that some people consider their identification as questionable. There is no doubt that dinosaurs once lived on Earth and in certain places seem to have been numerous. Paleontologists have found evidence of their existence in sediments from all continents, including Antarctica and have found evidence that includes bones, eggs, nests, and footprints. Dinosaur bones, footprints and other trace fossils have been identified by the thousands, and are especially prevalent in the US, Argentina, Spain, France, Russia, China, Mongolia and North Africa.

Skeletons on display in museums are rarely the original findings, but are replicas. The original bones are too valuable and delicate to be exposed to the public and are usually stored in special chambers that can only be accessed by professional scientists. Furthermore, the skeletons of museums are usually an assembled combination of replica bones from various specimens, which sometimes come from distant places. Despite this, these replicas can be considered reasonably reliable and in fact, some are complete specimens, such as the Tyrannosaurus rex “Sue” (photo 1) in the Chicago Field Museum. The animations on television, however, are much more speculative, especially as regards skin color, physiology, and behavior.

Were all dinosaurs large?

Photo 2: Some dinosaurs for size comparison
Photo 3: Struthomimus size comparison

The study of dinosaur bones, eggs and footprints provides valuable information about their size, physiology, social behavior, and habitat. While dinosaurs are known to be the largest land animals to have inhabited the planet, the average Diplodocus being 115 ft long (35 m) from head to tail (photo 2), not all dinosaurs were giants. Some species were small, similar in size to a sheep or dog. For example, Struthiomimus (photo 3) was the size of an ostrich, and Compsognathus (photo 4) was no bigger than a rooster. Often the species exhibited in museums are the largest and are usually represented in threatening postures intended to impress visitors. This has distorted the image of dinosaurs in the minds of many people.

Where did dinosaurs live?

Dinosaurs appear to have been well adapted to their habitats, which spanned the globe, from rivers to forests to deserts. How do we know? The dinosaurs were buried in sediments (sand, mud), which later became sedimentary rocks. Some characteristics of these sedimentary rocks are used to identify specific environments such as beaches, rivers, swamps, lakes and arid deserts. Other fossils associated with these deposits (fossil plants, shells, microfossils, etc…) also provide valuable information on the environmental conditions. Thus, by studying the sediments in which the dinosaurs were buried, paleontologists can learn about the environments (paleoenvironments) in which they lived.

What did dinosaurs eat?

We know what dinosaurs ate by studying their teeth. Most dinosaurs were herbivores while some were carnivorous and fed on small animals, fish and other dinosaurs. Size did not always determine what an animal ate. For instance, the largest known dinosaur is Argentinosaurus (photo 5), a sauropod that probably weighed 100 tons.

Photo 5: Argentinosaurus

Argentinosaurus was herbivorous, like other large sauropods. On the other hand, Spinosaurus (photo 6) and Tyrannosaurus rex, had an approximate weight of 7-8 tons each and were the largest carnivores to roam the planet.

Two other sources of information about what dinosaurs ate are fossil stomach contents and coprolites (fossilized excrement). The bones and teeth of fossilized animals have been found in the stomach of some dinosaurs, which shows that these animals were part of their diet. Inside coprolites from what are thought to be Titanosaur sauropods scientists have found conifer leaves, palm leaves and, surprisingly, grass. The presence of grass is puzzling because it is assumed that these plants did not evolve until after the extinction of the dinosaurs.

What was the origin of the dinosaurs?

According to the theory of evolution, dinosaurs originated from ancestral animals, called archosaurs (photo 7), through a gradual process of accumulation of mutations and natural selection. Their remains in the geologic column appear in the layers of rock that paleontologists call the Mesozoic (Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous), which according to conventional geologic time scale, corresponds to 250 to 65 million years ago.

If Darwinism were true, we should find organisms of less complexity and diversity in the early Triassic rocks, and forms of higher complexity and diversity in the Cretaceous layers. This would fit the evolutionary model of increasing complexity and diversity over time.

However, the reality found in the rock record is completely different. Although dinosaurs have been studied for almost two hundred years, their origins remain uncertain. Dinosaur fossils appear suddenly, without connection to any known ancestor and disappear just as abruptly in the fossil record. If the process of macroevolution were true, we would expect to find a gradual arrival, but in fact the opposite is observed. Dinosaurs seem to appear fully formed, well adapted to their environment and highly diversified. Thus, the theory of evolution does not seem to adequately explain the origin of these animals.

Creationists do not accept the evolutionary interpretation. Instead, most creation scientists suggest that dinosaurs were part of God’s original creation, which later, as in the case of other animals, suffered genetic variations leading to carnivorous ways.

Why did dinosaurs go extinct?

Though there is still debate among scientists, the conventional belief is that dinosaurs died out as the result of a meteor impact and the resulting environmental disasters that it caused. Great volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are thought to have accompanied the impact, which would have been quite catastrophic. The volcanic eruptions would have blown huge amounts of gases and dust into the air. This, along with dust from the impact itself, would have blocked enough sunlight to cause a shift in global temperatures, which would have been difficult for cold-blooded animals to survive, leading to their ultimate decline.

Most Christians, however, believe that dinosaurs were destroyed during the flood. Others believe that this particular group of animals had been altered so drastically by sin that they were not allowed on the ark and so their kind was totally lost.

Country rap musician Colt Ford, whose real name is Jason Farris Brown, has given credit to God for his survival, saying he died two times following a heart attack last month.

The 54-year-old artist suffered a heart attack on April 5 after performing at the Dierks Bentley Whiskey Row venue in Gilbert, Arizona. The artist said during an April 23 Interview on the “Big D & Bubba” syndicated radio show that he essentially died twice. However, he was brought back to life in the intensive care unit at the Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.

Ford said doctors initially told him he had a 0.1% chance of surviving in his condition, but he said, “God couldn’t have had me in a better place.”

The country star believes the Lord gave him a chance to live in order to use him to do even more great things through God’s divine plan.

“The Lord had more for me to do, more music for me to make, hopefully more differences to make in some people’s lives,” Ford said on the show. “It’s been life-changing. It’s been spiritually changing. Obviously, it’s been physically changing.”

Even though he survived, doctors told him he needs to prioritize his health as he is on the road of recovery.

On the night of the incident, Ford said he doesn’t remember having performed. But, memories of him walking back to his bus and sending a text to his fiancée came back to him after the incident.

“I walked back to the bus, texted my fiancée, ‘Hi baby,’ and fell over dead,” he said. “I died two times. Luckily, my band came out to check on me.”

Ford said if he had his heart attack in a different location, he probably would not have been able to receive the medical attention he required to survive.

Ford didn’t shy away from his faith even before the health scare.

“Colt Ford is about God, family, friends, and America,” the performer states on his official bio. “I’m just a guy who loves life. I love people.”

While he was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, the musician sought prayers from the public.

In 2021, Ford was diagnosed with eye cancer, which required surgery and chemo drops.

“I had so many friends asking, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?'” Colt told People at the time. “But I just thought everyone was dealing with so much stress and stuff.”

The cancer diagnosis and treatment changed his perspective on life.

“I thought to myself … all the dumb s— I have done, I could have killed myself multiple times and this is what’s going to take me out?” he said.

“I know darn well that God never puts anything on you that you can’t handle, but the Lord might have a lot more confidence in me than I thought.”

After beating cancer, the singer was later diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder, myasthenia gravis, a rare chronic autoimmune disease marked by muscular weakness without atrophy. It is caused by a defect in the action of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions.

The autoimmune disorder mainly affects his face, eyes and throat.

“It hadn’t really affected my throat, but it really affected my eye,” Ford told Taste of Country last May.

“[I] had no control over my right eye. It really messes with your vision,” he added.

“I could see perfectly out of either eye, but then I would look together, and I’d see three of you, and you would be melting together like a lava lamp.”
