Ghanaians battling with life-threatening Non-Typhoidal diseases can rest easier as scientists from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology have commenced a clinical trial of a novel vaccine against the diseases at Agogo, in the Asante Akyem North District of the Ashanti region of Ghana.

This study will assess the safety, and body’s reaction to the vaccine produced by GlaxoSmithKline. The trial known as PEDVAC iNTS is sponsored by GSK Vaccines Institutes for Global Health (GVGH) in Siena, Italy. Approximately 516 healthy people will be recruited for the trial.

“The participants are made up of 20 adults 18-50 years of age, 40 children 24-59 months of age, 60 infants 9 months of age, and 396 infants 6 weeks of age) will be recruited for the trial,” said Prof. Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Principal Investigator of the project.

The trial has already received approval from the KNUST Committee on Human Research, Publication and Ethics, Ghana Health Service Ethics Review Committee, Food Drugs Authority of Ghana as well as the Institutional Review Board of The GSK Vaccines Institutes for Global Health.

About Non-Typhoidal Diseases

Salmonella infections are broadly divided into Typhoidal (Enteric/Typhoid fever) and non-Typhoidal. The non-typhoidal infection (NTS) are mainly caused by Salmonella Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis and manifest as self-limiting gastroenteritis.

However, invasive disease (iNTS) which could rapidly cause death does occur particularly in resource-poor settings in sub-Saharan Africa among infants and young children with malaria, anemia, and malnutrition, the elderly and in the immunosuppressed, including HIV infected individuals.

Invasive non-typhoidal salmonellosis is very prevalent and can result in death particularly among children under-5 in sub-Saharan Africa. Unfortunately, many of iNTS fever illnesses are often misdiagnosed as malaria.

The burden of iNTS is huge particularly in sub-Saharan Africa as the region is home to over 400,000 of the 535,000 yearly cases estimated in 2017.

An estimated 59,100 iNTS deaths with more than half of them in children 5 years of age and a 14.5% case fatality rate was reported in 2017 and the sub-Sahara Africa sub-Sahara Africa sub-region disproportionately accounted for large percentage of these deaths.

Students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi have kicked against moves by the school authorities to control sports betting on campus.

The Information Technology Department has already blocked access to all betting sites on the university’s internet wifi system, pending a final decision by the academic board.

Acting University Relations Officer, James Oberko says the practice is becoming pervasive at the expense of academic work.

“The subject is at various level of discussion but the decision has not been taken so we cannot talk about the issue in the light of it being a decision by the university,” he told Joy News.

According to him, the subject of deliberation has been gambling and its effects on students.

The action is to ensure strict adherence with the order consequently, KNUST has decided against accepting donation or sponsorship from companies engaged or related to sports betting and gambling.

“It [betting] has reached levels that we cannot be proud of as a university set up to train minds and people to be responsible citizens for the nation in the future. However, gambling has taken a huge toll on their academic work and that is of concern to us,” Mr Oberko stated.

In a shocking move, some students are however protesting the decision to control the wifi system.

They say it is an attempt to block them from using the wifi since they can use their private means to bet.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is set to admit over 23,000 extra students in 2020.

According to management, the university is well-positioned to admit more students from the first batch of Free SHS students.

There have been growing concerns over whether the various tertiary institutions would be able to absorb all the students coming out of the second cycle institutions.

Responding to this, Acting University Relations Officer, James Oberko said KNUST will have no problem admitting more students.

He said the university has expanded its infrastructure and will be in a position to admit 23, 000 more students next year (2020).

Currently, KNUST has a student population of just about 55,000, Mr. Oberko further revealed.

“KNUST set off to increase access to the University by expanding its infrastructure and as you’ve seen from our visit, we’ve done a lot and we’ve a lot. We are almost close to finalizing it and when all the infrastructure are set, KNUST will be in a position to admit about 23,000 more students,” he said following a media tour to inspect some infrastructural projects in the school.

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has banned gambling and sports betting on campus.

Students found engaging in the practice will now be rusticated for a year.

The decision was arrived after an academic board meeting held last Thursday, May 2.

A source at the board of the school told Ultimate FM, “the University or any of its department hereafter shall not accept any donation or sponsorship package from any betting company for any program on the Science and technology campus.”

“The University Information Technology Service (UITS) has hence been instructed to block all betting websites from the University’s WIFI accessible to all students’’.

Management believes gambling among students on campus is gaining roots and distracting them from their core objective.

Sports betting is fast becoming a major stay among Ghanaian youth with many investing their finances and emotions in the English Premier League.

It has emerged that the two lecturers of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are responsible for producing wrong Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s statue which has sparked controversy and outrage in Kumasi and other towns in the Ashanti Region.

The shoddy work on the revered Asante King’s statue situated inside the new Kejetia Market was shamed by the Consultant in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com.

Exposing the contract deal in the interview, he said the contract was awarded to KNUST Sculpture Department upon Manhyia’s approval, due to the confidence reposed in them by Manhyia Palace in view of the fact the King is the Chancellor.

The Consultant for the Brazilian engineering and construction firm, Messrs Contracta Engineering Limited which built the new Kejetia market disclosed that Manhyia okayed the wrong statue produced by students at the KNUST sculpture department, hence its unveiling last week.

“From the beginning of the project we got a green light from Manhyia before we awarded the contract to the KNUST sculpture department. Manhyia was involved in every stage until its completion. Let me tell you we couldn’t have unveiled the statue if Manhyia is dissatisfied with the work,’’ the Consultant explained.

The Consultant was forced to come out to mention the sculptor behind the wrong statue after accusing fingers were pointed at him by some Kumasi angry residents who are calling for the pull down of the statue.

The angry Kumasi residents wondered the kind of supervision from the KNUST sculpture department’s lecturers to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) officials and Manhyia Palace that went into the statue before its unveiling last week Wednesday in Kumasi.

They took to the airwaves on Thursday and Friday to blast the Consultant for the shoddy work but in a twist, he said he cannot be blamed for the wrong statue but the Manhyia Palace which has been part of the stages of the statue should rather be blamed.

The Consultant asserted that the statue can be viewed wrongly depending on the angle one stands justifying that it looks exactly as the Otumfuo if the person stands afar.

“Otumfuo’s statue may look misrepresented to you depending on where you are picturing it from, if you stand close to it you might think it is not him but, if you stand afar you will realise that is Otumfuo,’’ he said.
